With thirteen years working as teacher, instructor and researcher in Vietnam, I bring with me to the course a different background and experience of education. From my view, Digital Storytelling in class is quite fresh and inspiring. Therefore, my feelings of my first two classes could be expressed briefly in those words: interesting and challenging. It's interesting because it opens my eyes to a new perspective; it touches a rich source of experiences and knowledge which has been lying deep and unexploited in my teaching life so far; and at the same time, it is challenging because it requires technological skills, which are not part of my strength. However, I hope I can follow the courses without many difficulties in terms of technology and achieve rewarding experiences in the end.

As for my experiences with digital cameras, the one I'm using is my second camera, a reliable Canon with which and I have taken quite a few pretty good (in my opinion, of course) photos, especially of my toddler and the setting in my neighborhood.

I am a third year 1st grade teacher at an elementary school in Humble,TX. I began my graduate program in Social Education this summer. I received my first digital camera (a Panasonic DMC TZ3) for my birthday this summer as well!
Needless to say, I do not have very much experience with a digital camera other than zooming in and out and reviewing the pictures I have taken with other people's cameras.
I also created my first digital story this summer to explain non-fiction writing to my students this year. I had heard of this digital outlet before, but I had never really been 'curious' enough to experiment with it myself until one of my courses forced me to this summer.
So, exploring this kind of storytelling more in depth is quite intriguing!

I have been fascinated with photography since I was a kid... it all started when my father's company transfered him (and by proxy, myself and my brothers) to europe. Ever since, I am seldom without my camera...

I have been a loyal "manual" camera user for years (I'm still rediculously possessive of my Canon RebelX), but I made the leap to a small FujiFilm FinePix digital about five years back. I would love to get a digital camera along the same lines as my canon... but that will have to wait.

By the way, I would like to ask if the make of the digital camera decides the quality of the photos ( an Olympus can give better pix than a Canon, for example). Anybody has experience of this?

I am a doctoral student in the IT program. I retired a year ago after having taught high school English and technology applications courses for 31 years.

I used a Sony digital camera at school and loved it. This past May I bought a Canon A570 PowerShot, with which I am very pleased. It has 7.1 effective mega pixels, face recognition, and image stabilizer.

I really don't have much experience with digital cameras. I tend to place it on auto, determine my focus, and click.

I have been through Dr. Robin's CUIN 6397 Creating Educational Materials, which involved developing and facilitating a workshop for teachers in using digital storytelling, and I also completed Dr. Robin's course last spring for CUIN 7346, Educational Uses of Digital Video.

I have created a few digital stories for my school Website showing student activities and for personal uses, such as posting a digital story online of my youngest child who graduated from high school this past May.

I have not actually, though, created a digital story for classroom use, and I am not well-versed in student pop culture and in incorporating that into teaching, though some of my projects for students in the past did draw on their outside interests and talents.

I have taught art, digital graphics & animation, and webmastering at the high school level for five years. I've also been teaching graphics courses at Kingwood College for a little over one year. I took a break from teaching full-time so that I could focus on finishing my Masters in Instructional Technology. In doing so, I am also a Quest 2 Facilitator here at UH.

I have been using digital cameras for about 6 years and I have done various photography projects as well as used them in creating digital media. I've used Sonys and Canons primarily but I'm looking forward to eventually getting a Nikon digital SLR camera soon, but it probably won't happen until this Christmas.

With regard to digital storytelling, I have made several for my campus principal to serve as an overview of the programs offered at our campus and student success stories. I also make one at the end of each school year for my classes where I compile work from each student and show it on the last day...they LOVE seeing their work on the big projector screen.

Hi everybody! I'm one of the TA's for both courses this semester. I am a doctoral student in C&I, in the Instructional Technology program. I have finished all of my course work, and I am currrently working on my dissertation proposal. I am going to be conducting research on history teachers' perceptions of theirs and their students' digital storytelling process. I have been working with students and teachers creating digital stories for about 3 years now. I still have much, much to learn about it. I'm looking forward to participating in the course during your digital storytelling journey. I always learn a lot! Please don't hesitate to ask me questions or chat with me. My email is: atrudnicki@uh.edu

I am currently in my second semester in the Social Education program here at UH. I got my undergraduate degree in Political Science, and I think it makes me cynical of everything. I have no classroom experience.

My experience with digital photography and digital storytelling is limited to what I learned last semester in the Technology in the Classroom course. I definitely enjoy the creative aspects of putting something together, but I'm not always pleased with the outcome.

I really have a love/hate relationship with technology. My computer has been unfaithful in the past, and I'm still not sure if she should be trusted. I do have a digital camera but it is dated. It's a Kodak Easyshare C340. From what I hear it was recently discontinued, which is probably not a great sign of its quality. Fortunately, I have never experienced any problems.

I'm beginning my second year of teaching Algebra I at Jersey Village High School. I've only been a digital camera owner for about two years now, but I've had experience with others before that. I'm a relatively experienced technology user, so I tend to learn more and more about my camera just by fiddling with it.

I have basically no experience with digital story storytelling unless you count slide shows and powerpoints. I've only had a quick brush with audio use so I'm looking forward to working more with that.

Overall, I'm cursious as to how I'm going to incorporate digital storytelling into my curriculum. I'm a huge advocate for using technology with math, but I'm not sure how this fits in. Should be interesting!

Hey folks. My name is Hal (Richard Halpin). I am an graduate Archaeologist from the UK and have been in Houston since just before Christmas last year. I started out following the Masters in Science Education but following an excellent and awe-inspiring course on Digital Storytelling with Dr Robin I realised that I was missing my vocation and I am currently in the process of switching the focus of my Masters to Instructional Technology.

My main interests with regards teaching are in adult education and education in a museum type setting. I love technology (though for some reason my wife seems to have more of it than I do) and finding ways to apply it in new ways.

Following the course in Digital Storytelling I have dabbled a little and have applied the technology and ideas to writing product reviews for my website (not Digital Storytelling, more Digital Review I suppose). I am interested in sound recording and podcasting and have been doing both for 3 - 4 years now and am interesting in playing with the Snowball mics as they are something I have been looking at picking up myself.

I currently have access to a Sony Cybershot DSC W90 (which is a pretty decent point and click camera) and a Canon EOS 350D (which I believe is called a Canon Rebel XT over here in the US). Sadly both of these cameras belong to my wife so they will be on loan for a while and I will have to be super careful with them. ;)

Nice to meet you all - see you on Monday!

I am in my 8th year of teaching at Katy High School in Katy, TX. I teach advanced placement U.S. History. This is my first semester as a graduate student.

I have used digital cameras sparingly in my past; however, my husband and I recently bought the canon powershot s3 which we used heavily this summer on vacation. I did not read the manual, but probably should have. The Zoom is about the most advanced function that I tried to use with the camera.

As for digital storytelling, I was introduced to it several years ago through the e-path program. I found the experience to be very valuable, but was disapointed when I found out our district (at the time) was unwilling to load the program on computers at school. Thankfully, I have found out recently that that is no longer the case and photostory is now available to be loaded on computers.

My name is Atifa Manzoor. I am currently teaching 6th grade social studies in Kingwood. As far as my "tech saavyness" I can manage but not do too many fancy things. I was introduced to Photo Story a couple of years ago and have been using that. Now that everyone is using it and it is getting boring, I am very glad that I am being introduced to digital storytelling.
What kind of camera do I have? Good question. All I know is that it is digital, and nothing extremely fancy. I would love to know more about using digital storytelling and digital cameras. I'm glad to meet everyone and hope we have a great semester.

I am a doctoral student in CUIN program. I am also working at the CITE lab as FAST member (Faculty assist and support team)I am very interested in creating educational stories or documentary films. I was involved in war hero project from Dr.Robin'sCUIN 7346, Educational Uses of Digital Video. These days, I got into photograpy and Apple I-movie.
I wanna say lot and I want to learn a lot. Just for now, I will keep quiet.

Hi! My name is Carolyn Repa. I am a 5th grade science teacher in Humble ISD. This will be my second year teaching.
I believe that digital storytelling is a great tool for students. Not only does it allow a teacher to express themselves, but it falls into the ideal of education becoming entertainment. Students expect to be wow-ed in the classroom or they believe they are not being taught anything. Although this is not true as a teacher you have to do what you can to reach your students.
I personally love digital photography and the freedom that it gives me with my pictures. It allows consumers to personalize photos and be a part of the creative process.

My name is Keyana Jackson and I am a first year teacher teaching 3rd grade Vanguard in HISD. I am also a masters students in CUIN. I mainly use my digital camera for classroom use for taking pictures of my students for different projects. I keep my camera in my desk at school so that I can take pictures for student portfolios. I plan on having my students make a digital photostory titled "The Best Part of Me".

I am the first in my family to graduate from college. Education has been very important to me and I have tried to instill my love for learning in others. This is why I decided to become a teacher. I am now teaching in Pasadena ISD in second grade. My first day of school will be tomorrow and I am excited. I hope to go on and have my own school someday. I own a digital camera that was gift from my boyfriend but I don't know that much about cameras. I was always a disposible camera person.

My name is Rachel and I teach 2nd Grade in Klein ISD - this will be my second year.
I have never made a digital story, never used any sort of photo-editing software, and never used any sort of audio or video editing software. I used to think I could keep up with the technology skills of my peers, but now after realizing what my classmates have and can do I feel really like I don't know anything!
I do have a digital camera that I have had for about 4 years. I am like Suzanne, I have just figured out how to use it by messing with it. It is a Sony Cybershot 6 megapixel.

This is my second half of my first year teaching high school math (Algerba 2). I began teaching in Jan 2007. My experience with digital photography includes casual use of my digital camera, FujiFilm E900, that I got in May 2007. I've read the manual and learned about some of the features such as forced flash, focusing off center, macro photos. I love being able to preview the picture before taking it. I really, really love being able to see what the picture looks like and take another one if I want to. From what the manual says, this digital camera goes from auto to full manual.

I've also used photostory and moviemaker for my classes. It was for an end of the semester yearbook type thing. I have also used Photoshop to edit digital photos for another UH-COE technology class.

However, I am having a hard time trying to see how I can relate to math content, specifically Algebra 2, to digital story telling.

Hello everyone, my name is Kristal Scott. I am persuing a master's degree in social studies education. I am not a teacher yet, but I will be soon.
My experience with digital cameras have been very minimal. I have a Sony that my mom bought for me, but I only use it for special occasions. I guess after this class I will start to use it more often. Does the camera on my cell phone count? I take lots of pictures of myself with that.
I have made a couple of digital stories for some classes, but nothing extraordinary.

I teach world history at Atascocita High School in Humble ISD. I have been using digital storytelling for about a year now, but I have only used Photo Story to create digital stories. I am interested in learning how to splice and put videos into digital stories. I also have experience using digital cameras to take pictures of ancient coins.

After teaching and coaching in several different environments, I came to UH to do Masters work full-time.

Most of my experience with photography can be attributed to my dad's cottage business as my high school athletic program's photographer. He has several Cannon Rebels and I am hoping to "borrow" one for the purposes of this class.

My name is Charon Grimaldo. I'm currently teaching second grade. Last semester I taught first. This is actually my first time teaching at the beginning of the school year (I began teaching in January) so it's all a new experience.

Frankly, I don't have much experience with digital cameras or digital stories. I really need to learn how to make a digital story so I hope I can learn now. It sounds like it's not too complicated, and it kills me not to know how to do one.

Anyway, I have a cheap digital camera (Vivitar ViviCam 5385)that I use to take everyday pictures (i.e. family photos). I don't know how to do anything fancy with it (or even know if the camera has the capacity to do so). Basically I know the basics: zoom in, out, view pics, delete pics, turn on/off. Obviously, I have no experience with serious picture taking. I hope to learn a lot more from this class. I have a special interest in wildlife and hope to take some cool pictures of animals.

Hello everyone. Im starting this class a little late due to surgery. I promise to get caught up.

I am a high school teacher at Sam Houston High School with the Houston Independent School District. I am participating in the AVID Program. I am a very creative person who has varied interest. I enjoy taking pictures of stiff life and people. I hate my own picture being taken though.
I have some experience with digital cameras but I am truly an amateur. I have a camera but it is very limiting. I take pictures just for fun. I have been creating photo stories for quiet some time now. I use them in my classrooms to enhance instruction and hopefully, student learning. They are fun and students like them. I have also incorporated them into virtual tours that I have created. I can use music and narration. I still need to learn how to import music into them. I am very comfortable using photo story. I am excited about this class and hope to learn more about integrating digital stories into my classroom. I hope to give my students the skills needed so that they can create their own digital stories for class projects and oral presentations.

I am a second year First grade teacher. I am presently teaching math and science. I am going to UH for my Masters in Art Education.
I have zero experinece in digital photography, photostory or photoshop. This is all new to me.
I had a Sony Cybershot digital camera which was great, but it just broke. So now I will be shooting with a Canon Elph. I am hoping to learn how to use the camera features and how to alter my images. I also am looking forward to creating a digital story. I can't wait to incorporate what I have learned into my lessons

I was one of the first to jump on on the digital camera bandwagon. I bought a huge olympus 1.2 megapixel camera for about $600 dollars. Of course with the rate of technology, it was way outdated by a few years. I recently bought a canon powershot camera basing my buying decision on size, clarity and megapixels. I love taking pictures, but the only thing I know about my camera is how to point and shoot.

I am a 2nd year teacher at North Shore Middle School teaching 8th grade science.

Yeah, so I'm posting this super late. Anyhow, I am a 3rd grade bilingual teacher, teaching for the first time. I graduated in Dec 2006. I started grad school Jan of 2007.
I love digital cameras! Once I could afford it, I bought one that wasn't so huge (we had the early version) and had better quality. I take pictures regularly and have found myself intrigued by the sky, since that is what I have been taking lots of pictures of.
